/ Belgrade, May 29, 2017/ The Serbian government adopted the proposal of Deputy Prime Minister and President of the Coordination Body for Gender Equality Zorana Mihajlovic that May 18 be declared a Day of Remembrance of the murdered women victims of violence. This proposal is a joint initiative of the NGO network „Women Against Violence“ and the Coordinating Body for Gender Equality.
On the occasion, Mihajlovic explained that from next year May 18 to be marked as Remembrance Day for victims of domestic violence, but also the day of the fight against all those who attack women.
It will be a day when we pay homage and remember every woman who lost her life in family and partner violence, she said, adding that it will also be the day when we will loudly say that violence against women must stop.
It is recalled that in the past ten years, more than 330 women lost their lives in this way, stating that they will always support such and similar initiatives aimed at protecting women and fight for their rights and better position.
Without equal status of women and men, we can not speak of a developed society and the values to which we aspire, concluded Mihajlovic.
Activists of „Women against violence“ Network handed Mihajlovic recently over 8,000 signatures in support of a petition for the declaration of May 18 for Memorial Day to the murdered women victims of violence.
This date was chosen because on 16th, 17th and 18th May in 2015, seven women were killed in Serbia in family and partner violence.
